Back to Work and Stuff
Wow - leave town for a bit and when you get back there's not enough time in the day to get things done.
So here are a few observations from the recent trip.
*** I wish I could have a condo in the city and this house in the middle of nowhere. City time and fun stuff to do then quiet time. OTOH having 2 places would be twice as much work - so maybe not.
*** When taking a bag on a flight, it might be a good thing if you don't put sand in it. Or if you do, make sure it is well wrapped.
Some poor woman ended up with sand all over herself because some idiot man had sand in his backpack which he put in the bin over her head. As the plane took off, sand started a nice streaming motion out of the bin and onto her.
*** Please don't use the open overhead bin as a grab bar to hoist yourself out of your airplane seat. If you break the bin because you are a large person, we don't get to fly anywhere. It also means you need to do some exercise so your own legs can get you in and out of seats.
*** Women who are no longer in high school should never ever wear short plaid skirts with tights. No matter how skinny you are, you look ridiculous - not younger - trust me on this.
*** Saw a woman walking down the street in black mid-calf length boots. They had 5 inch stiletto heels and some sort of white fur thing down the front. Looked like a couple of rodents had landed on them and were holding on for dear life. How stylish.
*** Went to a dueling piano bar in Chicago called Howl at the Moon. It was a blast.
*** Saw the Bears game at this bar called State. They have really excellent cheese toast plus we got a booth with our own 40+ inch television screen... along with what seemed like 100 other televisions in the place. Since we couldn't go to the game and since it was way warmer in the bar - it was great fun to watch the game there.
*** Went to a Blackhawks game and sat in one of the luxury boxes because my daughter can get tickets through work. They had really excellent skirt steak sandwiches. The game was terrific too.
*** At some point in your life, make time to hit Michigan Avenue on the day before Christmas and just walk around with the crowds (shopping is not the objective here). Best comedy routine you'll ever see. People are funny when you just stop to watch them.
*** Had some either late teen or early twentysomethings staying in rooms across the hall from us. At one point they apparently decided that room hopping and slamming doors would be fun. Lucky for them they did it during daytime hours. However, I did really want to go out in the hall and ask if I could help them figure out which room they wanted to be in after the doors had slammed about 30 times in 10 minutes. Good grief.
*** There is nothing better than having a Starbucks 2 blocks from the hotel. I get a walk, I get coffee with chocolate, it's a wonderful way to start the day.
*** Overheard a woman on the plane coming back to Boston complaining about how cold it was in Chicago... what? That wasn't cold!
*** Well I think that's it for now. More later I hope. All depending on how much work I have to do first.

I can't believe how inconsiderate so MANY people in hotels are of other guests, in general. Slamming doors, loud talking/yelling in the hallways (and I don't care what time of day, it's rude), etc. They really seem to think they're the only people in the hotel. I've got a free clue for those assholes: that whole "make yourself at home" thing? It's not really meant to be taken literally. Gah.

Yes this entire "make yourself at home" thing people seem to have going on is just not right. I think my hotel stay was a bit less traumatic than yours was though!

Perhaps they think that we've never encountered inconsiderate jerks before, and would therefore be impressed.

I don't think there is a colder place in the US than Chicago. BRRRRR.

Whew - Back
I have lots to blog if I can find the time. We went to Chicago for Christmas and spent the week bugging the kids. Heh.
Got back last night and now I'm into post trip fix up. Getting the mail, doing the wash, getting work done. It was really great to get offline for close to a week. I only checked email. I must say, it's very relaxing to kick back and ignore the world for a while.
More later when I get a chance to pull together a longer post.

I'm convinced that things like 'chronic fatigue syndrome' are tied to our inability to unplug & turn work off. And remember when friendship meant actually talking to friends, rather than spending hours on Facebook?

You may be right. OTOH it's pretty awesome to meet people you never would have met elsewhere. This makes it a difficult thing to peg as to whether it's good or bad.

Merry Christmas
Over the next few days I will not be online much. So to all my friends out there, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I may be checking out blogs, but unless I end up with lots of free time I won't be posting.
I'll be having fun though and I hope you will too!
Geekiness Takes Over
It's been a while since I mentioned that we have a netbook - the EEE PC. We bought it a couple of years ago and it's been okay. It came with Xandros Linux, was good for getting online and doing some simple stuff. However, it's been a while since the company has sent out any updates and the poor old thing was not performing so well anymore. The worst part was, we tried to update Firefox and it was a nightmare. Time to find something new.
Today we updated it to Ubuntu Linux. We downloaded an iso image and booted from the USB to see if it would work with this little thing. Then the fun began. Ubuntu could see the wired NIC but not the wireless. We tried a number of things including trying to install other kernels - which didn't work. I have no idea why it happened but... we walked away for a bit and when we came back, the wireless connection was available.
It's one of those things that makes me want to scream because it doesn't make any sense. I shouldn't complain since we got it going. After we used it for a short time, we installed it and blew away the old Xandros. It's nice and updated and faster than the old stuff. Now it's in the middle of doing software updates, but so far so good.
We did walk earlier today and the pond has turned half way to ice. It even looks as if people have been skating on it! I'm amazed - it hasn't been frozen that long. You wouldn't catch me out there until it's been below freezing for at least 3 weeks not one. Heh.

Brrr! That does look way too cold for me!
My EeePC came with XP by request, and its been very stable and reliable. My main aggravation with whomever did the setup is that they set the C drive to have very little memory and the D drive got the lion's share. The main CD is a ghost image and I am unable to reallocate resources.
So, with XP's voracious habit of sucking up any spare bits and bytes just for the heckuvit, I periodically still have to just kill the whole thing and start from my boot disk all over again. I've directed every temp file and download and browser to the D drive, but XP will still load up the C drive with Software Distribution files and whatnot. I have ACRES of storage on D just mouldering away.
I wish I was savvy enough and brave enough to totally wipe the OS and start with something more sensible and efficient, but I'm quickly becoming a Luddite.

Unfortunately, to reallocate space, you would have to boot from an external source and not from the recovery partition. Unfortunately, in order to make it "easier" on people who know nothing about computers, they have made something more difficult to change if you do know things. And yes, windows does have some really funky ways of doing things.
It's always something. Heh.

My new boss sez my writing is too terse. Dammit, I knew it. If I spoiled the SOB with nouns, he'd only want verbs too.

Well Cappy some bosses are like that - no matter what you do it's never enough. LOL.

Hello
Yes, I've been avoiding the blog. Sorry about that. I've been doing many other things in my "real life" which means I get to the blog and I'm too tired to make the effort.
Had a meeting earlier in the week and those always tend to throw me completely off my routine. I should get out more. Ha.
***
I've been trying to figure out some online software that someone else set up. But without that person to explain what they did and why, it's taken me several days to unwind the process. It will now be tidied up and fixed to make it easier. I'll have to write some procedures so others can do the work without the same loss of time. *sigh*
***
The rest of the time has been spent looking cross-eyed at our work network stuff. Trying to figure out which thing goes to what and what networks go to which. I think I just about have a handle on it and then find something that doesn't fit. Lovely. I need some large sheets of paper and then I need to draw pictures of it to get a better idea. Just haven't had the time so far.
***
Bought some new boots that I really like - but they don't like me. I will be taping my feet up for quite a while until certain areas stop poking me. Most annoying.
***
About 5 weeks ago I stopped drinking soy milk in my Starbucks beverage. This came about when I was talking to my sister. She hadn't been feeling "right" and went to the doc. Turns out she has very low thyroid hormones floating about. They caught it very early and she'll be fine.
However, while discussing this with her, we talked about how she now needed to avoid soy products because of the thyroid hormone (or at least avoid them for about 4 hours after taking them). She told me she had given up all soy about six months ago because it was causing digestive problems for her. I went searching around and reading about soy/soy milk after that and decided it might be a good experiment to see what would happen if I gave it up.
Turns out - lots happened. My digestion has changed completely. I am now sleeping through the night most every night (I was at the point where I was waking up every 2 hours with severe hot flashes). I have almost no hot flashes any time day or night. And in general I am feeling less irritable. I'd say it's been a success.
So now I've gone from a Soy Mocha every day to regular coffee with chocolate. I can't give up the chocolate.
***
I think that's enough rambling for now. So here's a little bonus - rock wall picture. (click for bigger)

As a youngin I was allergic to milk and I lived on a soy substitute. Once I got older I switched from that to lots of wine and I've slept fantastically ever since.
I highly recommend it!

Mr. Bingley I do believe I am the only person in the world who gets more hyper the more wine I drink. LOL. I try to hold to no more than 2 glasses of the stuff or I'm up all night. I know I'm strange.

Winter Has Arrived
We've been up and down and up and down with temps here lately. The beginning of December had temps in the high 20's. Then the big storm rolled through and the temps went up to the 50's. Now we're down in the high teens. I think it will stay this way a while.
This is what you get when the temps drop:
Kinda pretty isn't it. Cold though.
Here's a friendly dog who really loves this weather.

I was wondering if you'd finally get to the colder weather. I think our temp has crept above zero again ... it might be up to 2 or 3 by now. Keep the pictures coming, though. Nice!

Yes, I'm Here
But I've been so dratted busy. I can't seem to find the energy to sit down and do a post. That's what happens when I have to think too hard. My brain just can't handle it. Ha.
I know the Midwest has been in the snow zone/deep freeze. We've had RAIN. About 2 inches over the last couple of days. Otherwise it's been positively balmy - in the high 40's. Too weird.
I leave you with this pic from our walk about a week ago. I think this horse was trying to tell me something.
Amazing Little Thing... The Internet
When stuff works, then suddenly it doesn't, this bothers me. Actually it pisses me the hell off. This is a meandering dialog, a stroll through my brain, which will likely bore you to tears. So feel free to ignore the rest. more...

I do have an iPhone (and hence, an iPod, of course) and I do subscribe (as in pay-for) a podcast, the Dennis Miller radio show stuff. Anyway, I have no real point here. No. I'm just saying I like that podcast and sometimes I listen to music, it depends. Sometimes I just wanna scan the radio stations all over the country and the world, and to that end, I found an app I love called TuneIn Radio, definitely worth $1.99 on iTunes.
Boring comment is now over.

If we tried we could have the most boring post and set of replies ever. heh. Dennis Miller... I love him. Didn't think of him releasing his show as a podcast - must look into this.

Patti - I was so happy to find the podcast. I never remember to listen on Saturday morning so I kept missing them. Of course you could play it on your computer you know.... LOL.

How can this be? I have been told for the longest time that all Europeans were slim, trim, and beautiful. All us ugly Americans were hideously obese. We've seen email pictures and television pictures to prove this is so. Over and over and over again. Europeans = thin... Americans = fat. Got it?
So what happened? Did they suddenly wake up fat this week? Maybe it's because of global warming.

Let's file this under... Duh - Ya Think or Let's State the Bleeding Obvious.
Time to set up that protest page and send a note to all your "friends"...the We Hate the New Facebook Pages and Want the Old Ones Back. heh.
****
On a sidenote, I saw the story about Julian Assange and wikileaks on the Entertainment page of google's news today.
****
And last of all. My son called me late Sunday night. He was trying to study and his internet connection kept dropping on him. After I had him ping a few things, I was able to determine it was his DNS service causing the problem not his actual ability to get out on the net. So I had him put OpenDNS on his computer. Instant fix.
Damn! Wish they had told me this earlier. I had no idea I was so unhappy. The things you learn about yourself from reading news stories... never ceases to amaze.

Well today seems to be a treasure trove of fun little stories... and yet another one to file under - Duh - Ya Think or Let's State the Bleeding Obvious.
Hello!!!! knock knock knock Hello news media!!!! Computer security experts have been saying this for YEARS. What part of "it's not safe" was unclear to you?

I had the very, very great honor of meeting two survivors of the USS Arizona when I visited Pearl Harbor last month. Those gentleman had a haunted look in their eyes which brought tears to mine.
It's our job to ensure that 'haunted look' isn't in our eyes, for the next generation to see.

Rocks Trees and Shed
You know, when you mess up and use really high ISO settings - the end result is okay - but a bit too grainy. I still need to figure out how to get the noise out. I know it's doable, I have avoided doing it up til now. Oh well.
Much better to check the camera settings before rather than cleaning up after. heh.

E - being as I am lazy and we were walking - I had the camera set on "P" so the camera chose the settings
Mr Bingley - ROFLMAO.
Laura - you can always experiment with different settings and see what you get. It's fun and with SD cards it's way easy to just delete the stuff that doesn't turn out.

It's been a busy day as usual. Lots of things going on. I did manage to get a full night sleep last night for the first time in ages (so long I don't remember the last time). I hope tonight will continue this new and exciting trend.
