Filing

I really really have to figure out a new filing system.  Or rather a new office configuration to make my filing easier.  David Allen of GTD fame was so so right when he said - anytime filing can not be done easily and immediately, it will pile up.

And thus I will spend a few hours this evening getting my filing done because I've been dumping papers in my closet... then telling myself I'll get it put away next chance I get.

Right.

Out of sight is out of mind.  Well, until I walk in to set something down and the stack falls over.

Ha - serves me right for putting it off.

Got an iPhone or iPad?

There is an important security update out there.  I know my i devices are set to check for updates once a month and that's not for a few days yet.

So I connected my iphone and checked for updates in itunes to get it installed.  Would be a good idea to do this.

It's Obligatory

About once a year or so reporters feel obligated to tell us how technology will ruin our lives. This time, it's the "smartphone".

Sleep with your iPhone? You're not alone

While smartphone users worry about mobile hacking and other security threats that are making news these days, psychologists and others are concerned about another equally troubling issue: the growing obsession among people who would much rather interact with their smartphones than with other human beings.

Didn't I hear this about, let's see... radio, television, Walkmans, ipods, computers, computer games, texting phones, etc, etc, etc.

I swear there has been at least one story like this every year since I can remember.  When I was a kid (and we had 3 whole tv channels) the story was

"Kids aren't going outside to play! They sit in front of the tv mesmerized! What will become of us!!!"

The funniest part of the story which is reflected in the title of the piece...

For some, the anxious feeling that they might miss something has caused them to slumber next to their smartphones. More than a third of U.S. adults -- 35 percent -- now own a smartphone, according to the Pew Research Center, and two-thirds of them sleep with their phones right next to their beds.

For the two-thirds mentioned here, they don't mention whether or not this is the only phone in the house.

And

No word on whether those in technology meltdown have a landline phone next to their beds...

Thanks a lot Google

Saw this story circulating tonight.

Google search: now with malware warnings

Google has activated a scheme which will see users warned if their Windows systems appear to have a particular type of malware. The warning "Your computer appears to be infected" will be displayed at the top of search results when Google detects that the search query has arrived at their systems via a proxy which modifies the search requests.

Just dandy. I have spent, I don't know how long, trying to make people stop clicking on links that purport to tell them they have some kind of "infection". All the variants of Windows Defender and more recently Mac Defender will pop onto your screen and tell you to "click here" to find out how to fix it.

Now GOOGLE of all entities just adds to the general confusion by giving people a link to click to "learn how to fix this".

I'll cut straight to the point - Google - you are MORONS! Thanks so much for muddying the waters because you saw some malware pointers. The problem is, the average users can NOT tell the difference between your half hearted baked effort to inform them of a problem and real malware.

This is idiocy taken to a whole new level. Especially when you find the link doesn't even give these poor people any decent information on how to get rid of the malware.

Geeze Google - just cut to the chase and hand out the malware yourself as they do the searches. It's easier that way.

BAH!

Well... Yeah...

Seen on the intarwebs:

@JustinNOAA: Update: ~148 million under #heat advisories/warnings today; 32 states + DC

It's called SUMMER. My advice - look up the definition and learn. Good grief.

Dragonfly and Chickens

And thus we come to the end of another weekend. Didn’t do much which is fine. It was on the warmer side, in the low 90’s and today we even had a breeze. The bugs continue to number in the millions, all of them trying to buzz my ears as I walk.

Saturday’s pics were rather a bust. I was using the wide angle lens and being a bit lazy I didn’t check while taking the pics and a I blew out all the skies. Oh well. There will be other skies and I will be more careful next time.

Today we had chickens and a dragonfly.

Not sure what was up with the dragonfly. I got up very close to take my shot and it never moved. (as always click to make bigger)

Then it is a never ending source of amusement to me to see chickens roaming around. This is not a usual site in the suburban Midwest.

alt text

That’s about it for now. Hope everyone else had a great weekend.

Smoke

Over on the The Digital Story, Derrick has a photo assignment this month called "Smoke”. I was trying to get some pics that might work for it… but so far I’m not satisfied.

First we have the smoke bush giving off smoke

alt text

Then we have a reflection that looks like Smoke on the Water.

Must ponder a bit more. Not sure what I’ll try next.

A Few Observations

I thought things would not be quite as busy as they have turned out to be. Funny how that works.

In the department of "it's back again"...

I've been seeing quite a number of "how to blog" posts linked lately.  I find them amusing.  Then again I have never aspired to be a blogger with a huge audience so what do I know.  But what the heck I might as well jump in with useful advice! To that end, here are my rules:

1. Start a blog.

2. Write when possible.

That's it.

No.  Nothing else.

Really.

Everything else is silly. For every rule about what to write and how to write it, you'll find a dozen popular blogs that break it.  So if you want to blog - then get a blog and write one.  Blog platforms are free. Until you do those two things you will never be a blogger successful or not.

The end.

****

Every few once in a while some Indian (as in the country of India) gurus of some sort come to a hotel near my Starbucks. Not sure what they are in town to do. However, when they are in town, a bunch of Americans, mostly women, turn up at Starbucks for coffee dressed in white linen stuff - mostly sari type of dress, but there are some pants too.

They look silly.

If they were of Indian descent it wouldn't look silly, it would look natural.  But they look like Americans who are trying to be something they aren't in exactly the wrong place. It's good for a giggle though.

****

Looks like Google finally managed to lure people into one of their social network schemes.  Just tell people that invitations are limited... that's all it takes. No matter what your terms of service, people will beat down the door to get in.

Yes I'm in.  No I haven't posted anything except a few comments.  I don't have time for this.

****

We have a bumper crop of mosquitos and other flying insects this year.  Not sure why.  It's nearly impossible to go outside even on nice days because of the swarms.  I want to find one of those old insect foggers that used to drive through our neighborhood when I was a kid.. I want to fog the little suckers until they are all dead.  Or at least keep them away from my ears!

***

That's all I've got for tonight.  I do have pics, but no time to go through them and get them posted.  We shall see, maybe by midweek.
