Ah Friday

Time for the weekend.  It seems I managed to fix a few things just in time.  Now I don't have to think about them over the weekend which makes me happy.

One of these things was my office phone.  My land line monthly bill recently increased by over $10 per month.  So I decided to move the line to a basic cell phone.  I should have stuck with that plan, but then I would have no blog fodder.

Apparently Verizon now has something called Home Phone Connect.  It's a little black box that connects to the cell system. You plug your phone cord into this instead of into the wall, your phone then works over the cell system.  Less expensive than a cell phone.

Okay sounds good in theory.  We have an in home mini-tower because the cell signal here is not good.  And it appears that the Home Phone Center box I got did not like being connected via the mini-tower rather than the regular cell tower.  It's the only thing I can conclude.

The call quality was bad enough.  However, since most everyone has moved to cell phones and the overall call quality is bad, that was a minor inconvenience when I could save $35 a month for the phone line.  But over a 3 day period, I had exactly 1 phone conversation that was not disconnected in mid call.  At one point I had to call someone back 3 times.  The third time I gave it up and used my own cell phone, which worked beautifully.  Sheesh.

So, today I took the Home Phone Center back and had them switch the account to a cell phone.  Call quality is good now - even better than my land line phone (I think my old phone was just sucky).  Best of all,  there is no disconnect happening.  Whew.

This little problem along with the fact that one of the office internet lines has been going up and down like a yoyo for the last 3 days, has provided some interesting and inventive adjectives.  Basically I'm glad to see this week over.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.  I will really start my weekend, after I cook dinner tonight.  Now if only I could get someone to come cook my food for me... of course I did not win the big lottery (didn't even play) so that won't happen any time soon.

For that post Thanksgiving "what do we do now?" phase

You could check out the British Tech Network Media show.  Wherein I chat with the BTN boys about what is going on in the world of media.  Not that I know anything, but hey, they are great guys and fun to talk to.

Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, the best holiday of the year.  Nothing is required but food and then most of us get a 4 day weekend off. (although I have worked my share of Thanksgiving days in the past)

I missed picking up one ingredient for tomorrow's dinner... mushrooms.  *sigh*  Hope the grocery store is open in the morning. I tried dashing to the farm stand but they closed early today.  Then tried a local small market... no mushrooms.  My last chance is the big chain store being open tomorrow.  We'll see.

Tonight it's pizza.  Yay pizza!  Yay for someone else cooking.  That works.

Sending everyone out there in the US Happy Thanksgiving wishes.  Have a wonderful day!

Keeping busy

Not sure if it's been fun or exciting, but it's been a busy week.

Found a couple of things I've been looking for but hadn't yet run across in two different areas.

First I found a website via the paleo people called Steve's Original.  For ages I have been looking for any kind of "energy bar" type of thing that doesn't have additives and preservatives and other crap I can't eat.  This was a recommended site via one of the paleo blogs.  I looked it over and ordered one of their regular samplers and also a seasonal sampler.

Holy moly!!!!  Absolutely wonderful stuff.  The krunch bars are fabulous, the various jerky packets are delicious. The cereals... yum!  I will be ordering some of their Paleo MRE's which last 2 years (unless I eat them first!) for emergency rations.

Definitely super fantastic food.  I am truly amazed and delighted. I'm even going to put their link on my sidebar, I like it that much.  (no I don't get a thing for doing it, I just want to make sure they get some business because they provide a great product - fast delivery too).

Next up, my sister was looking for an inexpensive scanner.  Something small and portable and easy to use.

In this same vein I am an avid user of Evernote.  In the Evernote trunk I found the perfect thing.  The Doxie scanner. It's powered via USB so you need to use a powered USB port for it to work correctly.  I got one for myself and it was a piece of cake to get it up and running on both my mac and windows machines.  It also scans directly to Evernote which is even better!

They make a completely wireless type, but it's much more expensive.  Decided to pass on that for now.  In general wired mostly works better.

*** update:  I should note that for some totally unexplained reason, the scanner has pink hearts - no idea why nor do I care as long as it works... but this design feature may bother some people. I believe I saw a mention of stickers to cover the hearts somewhere, maybe on the home page of the scanner.  When I remember where I'll post a link.

***update 2: I had a look and the decals were supposed to come with it. I don't see them, only some blank white sheets in cellophane.  Wonder if they forgot to send other decals. Oh well - don't really care. heh.

Last of all I finally signed up for netflix at least for the winter.  I can't find everything I'd like to watch via streaming, but certainly enough to keep me occupied while it's cold and dark outside.  Not bad.

That's it for now. Time to go chill with a netflix show of some type.

Thoughts on a Tuesday afternoon

Today is an auspicious day. Tommy has been blogging for 10 years! TEN. Think about that. It's amazing! Head over and wish him a happy blogoversary because he's a fantastic guy.

Need some inspiration to get going on something? Go read what Dan has to say. Yes, you can do many wonderful things, all you have to do first is... Be amazingly awesome.

One of my favorite podcasts is called Here-n-There.  Karl and Missy are hilarious as they sort out the differences between the US and the UK.  They recently had a little contest because Missy wanted a Bond girl name.  I came up with  Ivana Flash.  So I now have my very own here-n-there mug!

With all the hurricane Sandy power problems being experienced in NY and NJ, it occurred to me that I should be pro-active on my own behalf.  I bought myself a solar powered USB charging station so I can keep my little devices powered up.

I will blog about it as soon as I get it fully charged and get a chance to power my phone and/or ipad.  It has been unfortunate that it came at the end of the day yesterday and today it's been so cloudy and dreary there wasn't enough sun to make a dent in the accumulation of power.  Kind of an amusing drawback.

And last of all, why in the world is the LA city council making resolutions about what people eat?   If they don't have enough regular government business to keep them busy then just dissolve the council since they obviously have too much time on their hands.

Best laid plans and all that

Well, I had meant to blog some this week... of course that didn't quite work out did it. There was just too much going on.

Last Sunday we attended a local jazz show that included Dorado Schmitt and the Django Reinhardt All Stars. In a very odd twist, the guy who stole the show plays an accordion. His name is Ludovic Beier. I swear I never thought an accordion could sound like that - amazing.

The other part of the show was the Grace Kelly quintet. (be aware music is autorun at her site in case you click the link and have your speakers on somewhere that is supposed to be quiet) She is a tremendously talented saxophone player. Terrific performer too. I can't believe she's only 20.  Great show indeed. We go to very few shows. Have to say I'm very glad we took the time to go see this one.

Had a big meeting Wednesday at Logan airport. Excellent presentations. I can say for sure that (TSA not withstanding) airport security is taken very seriously. I don't think I could do it, I have a hard enough time sleeping at night...

Of course we had the nor'easter roll through on the same day. It dumped a few inches of snow on us which has since melted away. Luckily I was able to sit out rush hour over at Remy's with some excellent snacks, drinks, and people. Then it was an easy drive home instead of inching home in traffic. I'd rather get home late than sit in rush hour traffic with snow/rain and wind.

Also got the water system yearly service. Now it needs to be tested to be sure the system is doing what it should. I don't think arsenic in the water is conducive to good health... just my feeling on it. We have to keep on top of the water filter maintenance to be sure it is kept out.

Got hold of the last of the Winston Churchill books - The Last Lion (Part 3). I knew someone was trying to finish the last one and apparently Paul Reid has done it. It was recently released. The other 2 were excellent but I read them years ago.

And last of all, if hurricane Sandy has made you start thinking about your emergency food rations, Nom Nom Paleo has pulled together a list (with sources) of things you might think about adding to your kit. Over at Steve's Original  (which she links) there are paleo MRE's that will last 2 years.  Lots of dense calories - well worth considering.

That's it for now! Have a fabulous rest of the weekend.

Well, it's a Friday sort of day. All day I've been remembering and forgetting stuff to blog. I really need an iphone 5 so I can use Siri. (of course this is a cop out since I do have Dragon Naturally Speaking for iOS and I could use it... but I don't).

Yesterday I installed Social Fixer on firefox, it's a plugin for FB (available on just about every browser except IE).  I have had it with political posts. I don't care who you are going to vote for. I don't care what candidate has done what. I don't care... Period.  I'm done.  I know who I will vote for and why.  Tuesday can not come soon enough.  Let's be done with this. (and that's as political as I will get right now).  Sheesh.

The NHL has cancelled the Winter Classic.  I am despondent.  I was hoping for hockey this year but apparently the NHL thinks it is not important.  Damn.

A new cab service has hit Boston (and Chicago) it will soon  be in NYC - if NYC can get cleaned up after the recent hurricane...  Hailo is the service and there's an app for that on the iphone and android.   On the plane coming home I was talking to the guy next to me and he was concerned about the fees for using Hailo.  It seems another cab service via an app is very very pricey.  Here's Hailo's online statement of cab fees.  Looks good!  Still, many thanks to the guy who made me think about this BEFORE I used Hailo to call a cab!  It never occurred to me to check.  D'oh!!!

After hurricane Sandy.  I'm wondering how many businesses will end up out of business simply because they had no decent business continuity plan.  I don't know that I'll ever find out, but it would be very interesting information.

I know, everyone else is thinking about people getting electricity back.  Having lived through a bouts of bad storms and no electricity, I know people will not be happy, but most will be able to manage somehow.

No I will not like yet another FB page.  I don't care why I should.  Sheesh.

That's all I have for now. If I remember the "important" stuff I was going to blog earlier, I'll post again.  In the meantime, if you have a chance, send a donation out to Team Rubicon.  They have stepped up big time to help with hurricane cleanup.  Support them - your dollars will definitely go to help people who need help and not to a corporation!

Have a great weekend.
