Work Is In Progress

I'm sure if you keep coming back to read, you'll notice I'm slowly working away at setting things up.

The first glitch I've run into is that although there is a comment page showing all the comments that have been made, I don't receive an email of comments and I'm not seeing the email addys entered by those commenting.  I have an email of my own in to Pixy.  I knew comments wouldn't be mailed out - but it will be a problem for me if I can't see the email addys of those posting as I do email back sometimes on comments.

The second glitch is minor - while I have all my categories on the side bar, they are not showing up in the posting drop down box.  Once again an email to Pixy I think he's working on it.

I piece-mealed my blog roll from my old one.  There was tons of overlap.  It would not be surprising if I missed blogs when I was loading those up, even though I was trying to get everyone.  I also need to add a couple of blogs too, but today I was only doing a copy and paste.  If your blog was on my side bar and now it isn't, let me know and I'll put it back.  Right now my eyes are crossing from jick-jacking around with all this. It's not hard - there's just lots of small things and it's easy to overlook stuff.

Last of all - if you read from an RSS feed - did it switch over okay?   I'm just wondering.

So He Should Be Tried By The Military

How much time in a Military Prison should this dude get?

Soldier Impersonator Arrested

Police arrested 23-year old Christopher Proe on Friday in South Yarmouth, Mass. They said he wrote more than $4,000 in bad checks to Pufferbellies night club in Hyannis.

The club normally does not accept personal checks, but Proe allegedly told the bartender he was an Iraq war veteran celebrating his safe return. Police said Proe never served in the military.

Wanna claim you are military? The first thing that happens is you should be tried in a military court. I'm thinking the guys in the military prison won't be real impressed with this dude...

Works for me.

Do Not Call Registry

As we all heard when they first started it, if you signed up for the Do Not Call Registry back in 2003 and you still have the same phone number, your registration will expire next year. This means you have to re-register. A slight PITA and one wonders if the new registration will "take".

However, that's not what I found most interesting about this story today. My problem will be remembering what year we moved in here and put this phone on the list.

This article had some very very interesting numbers in it.

Telemarketers are required to pay an annual subscription fee to access the FTC list so those numbers can be blocked from their dial-out programs. The companies also must update their own calling lists every 31 days to ensure there are no numbers from the registry on them.

The annual subscription fee for the list costs $62 for each area code, with a maximum cost of $17,050 for access to all U.S. numbers on the list.

The FTC reported this year that 6,824 companies and other entities paid $21.7 million in fees to access the database in fiscal year 2006. All told, 15,218 entities have paid $59 million in fees to access the database since the program's inception.

Most of the fees charged by the government are used to support the Do Not Call program.

Nealy $60 million over 4 years to support this database??? What the hell! Is it made of gold?

And when they say "Most of the fees..." what do they mean by that? Where does the rest of the money go?

Yet another gig I think I would like to have my hands on. I am just not enterprising enough!

I Think I Should Get Into This Climate Business

That's where the money is going now.

GENEVA (AFP) - The UN's meteorological agency on Friday called for a multibillion dollar boost for weather forecasting, warning that about 30 percent of economic wealth was directly exposed to the impact of global warming.

You didn't REALLY think it was about climate change now did you?

I Know Why

The big story of the night seems to be

Iranian President's Visit to Ground Zero Denied

Kelly earlier said he did not know why Ahmadinejad expressed interest in the site. "I am not sure we have the rationale behind it," he said.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Wednesday that an Ahmadinejad visit to Ground Zero "is a matter for the city of New York, but it seems more than odd that the president of a country that is a state sponsor of terror would visit Ground Zero."

It's very simple - he wants to honor the terrorists who murdered nearly 3000 Americans in such a spectacular fashion. This is a man who held American hostages and is currently supporting terrorists. He should never ever be allowed near Ground Zero.

It's A Croc

And not the kind that Jimbo dreads.

Army Wife was posting about how much she hates Crocs.

And a final plea to all of the Moms, that keep buying these and making your entire family wear them. STOP, they are unsightly, and your Husband looks like he has no balls.

I happen to agree with her - they are butt ugly and I don't care how comfortable they are - I will never wear them (although the shoes everyone else tend to find comfortable nearly always hurt my feet... but I digress).

Today I give you a real reason not to buy these hideous things...

Got Crocs? Be Careful on the Escalator

Apparently the shoes are so soft, they can get caught in the teeth of the escalators, especially with young children.

According to reports appearing across the United States and as far away as Singapore and Japan, entrapments occur because of two of the biggest selling points of shoes like Crocs: their flexibility and grip. Some report the shoes get caught in the "teeth" at the bottom or top of the escalator, or in the crack between the steps and the side of the escalator.

Most of the injuries are cuts and bruises, one child lost a toe, the opening story in this piece talks about a young boy who lost a toenail.

So, there you go - they are reported to be comfy - but you may want to reconsider footwear when going out into the world. Especially if you'll be riding escalators.

Tea Break

Finally a chance to surface and just relax a bit. There must be something in the air lately, work has been very odd. Lots of things going wrong and needing to be fixed. Of course fixing them takes more time than doing them right in the first place, but there it is. It's a confluence.

So, after working late last night, having a revelation about an issue this morning (sleeping on it is many times a wise idea) and last of all dealing with data layouts (I HATE data layouts - they make my eyes cross)... I have no idea what is going on in the world. I must say, that for the moment, I don't really care. The snippets I've heard have not impressed me.

I believe I've left comments and even emailed a few people - I hope I was coherent.

In the meantime here is a quote sent to me by blogless friend Chip. It's very interesting.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries [a devotee of a religion or cult]! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property (either as a child, a wife, or a concubine) must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science (the science against which it had vainly struggled) the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

Below the fold - the author and date... heh. more...

As Are All Memories

Sometimes they seem to have happened yesterday, other times they are far away. This year it will be 66 years since that infamous date December the 7th. Today it is 6 years since another infamous date.

Time moves on.

We don't forget.

I have a feeling for those who lived through that day 66 years ago, some memories are as clear as they were the day after it happened. That even with age and time, they do not fade.

Just as we will never forget. Either December the 7th or September 11th.

I will be at a Computer Security seminar today. It seems appropriate for this of all days.
