Headline Fun

It's been a while since I've done this. Tonight one of the headlines on my Yahoo News list caught my eye, so I thought I'd throw it out with a few others to make you giggle...

U.N. report: Chinese are moving to the cities

NO! Say it ain't so! We can't have Chinese people moving to cities! They need to move to caves.

NAACP reschedules protest of Seattle police

Where's our news crews? You mean we can't get a camera here? But we're having a PROTEST, we must have cameras! Well, drat, we'll do it another day.

Huge Dust Storm Breaks Out on Mars

Oh, so that's why my Firefox weather thingamabob keeps warning me of severe weather. I wonder if it will hit here soon.

And last but not least...

Should You Buy an iPhone?

Who the hell cares?

Wherein I Demonstrate to the World That I Can't Shoot

Yesterday we took Young Son out to the Smith and Wesson Range in Springfield, MA. Oddly enough, even though he's in the Army, he seldom gets a chance to go to the range. Apparently Germany has all kinds of environmental restrictions and a portion of those belong to gun ranges... so even the Army has difficulty with enough range availability for those who want to shoot.

Anyhow, Smith and Wesson is headquartered here and they have an excellent facility with a range, a huge store, a museum area, etc. We had lots of fun just wandering around the store and looking at various weapons that were for sale. Then we talked to the guys and signed in to use the range.

Because he is on a flight crew, Young Son is issued a .9mm when he is in the war zone and flying. (I'm not quite sure what that gun will do for you, but I guess it's better than nothing). In any case, he was quite happy to head out to S&W to use a pistol with a little more oomph. He checked out the Military and Police -Smith & Wesson M&P45.

I was very impressed with his targets. He did a great job getting good groupings even at the farthest distance. (don't ask me - I can't remember the distances at all - the numbers were 1,2, and 3... like that helps).

He was impressed with the upkeep on what is a "range weapon" - he said they had been taking good care of the gun, something he noted when he went to load it. I didn't really think about it, but it would be very easy to let a gun that is used as a range weapon get a little bit raggy. It takes some effort to keep them clean and in good condition. So kudos to the S&W staff as that's a hell of a job every day.

Beloved Husband shot this .357 Model 686 Plus Revolver. He was also able to hit the target consistently if not as well grouped as Young Son. Of course it's been over 20 years since he's gone shooting, so a little adjustment time is necessary.

I was worried about hand strength, of which I have none... not to mention arm strength. So I stuck with a .22 Model 617 Revolver - 4". Eventually I was even able to hit the target. I must stop here and say - I haven't been to a range since I was in High School. (shooting is an expensive hobby and for years we had no money, then there was no time) And even way back when, I was shooting a rifle - far far different than a pistol.

The Range Safety guy was GREAT! He helped me figure out the siting - which I was having a great deal of trouble with. (what he should've done was smack me upside the head for being an idiot - but instead he was very nice). I did manage to start hitting the target although I have a terrible tendency to pull up and to the right. I have no idea where the first 6 shots went - one assumes they ended up along the back wall somewhere - but I'm pretty sure I didn't even hit the cardboard backing of the target. Oh yeah, I guess I should note - I was also on the closest distance...

One of these days I'll get some more time and work on it a bit. We do have ranges closer to home, and oddly enough quite a number of gun shops in the general vicinity (far more than I ever saw in IL). It's just a matter of making the time to do it. I think we will because it was fun.

Eventually I may even develop aim... you never know.

Happy Father's Day

To all the wonderful fathers out there in the blogosphere. As my husband is back from his business trip, he gets a nice relaxing day at home. Tonight young son gets here for a week of his leave. So it should be a pretty good Father's Day for him.

Wow! (Updated)

I am not a watcher of American Idol or any of those type shows, but I had to steal this from Mrs. Who. She got it from The Anchoress who has the translation.

Yes, I had tears in my eyes after this one.

UPDATE:

Pam emailed me to say Paul's next performance has just hit You Tube... so here it is:

I've Been Memed... Again

This time Erica got me and since I have nothing else to blog right now... it gives me a post.

This is the "LALOLKFATYK = Learn A Lot Of Little Known Facts About Those You Know” meme. OOOOkay...

WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
No - not another single Teresa on either side of the family (and it's a big family)

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
Yesterday when I read Blackfive's post on "The One"

DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
I used to - now I type so much my writing has gotten pretty sloppy.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Any left over meat I have from the previous night dinner that I can make into a sandwich.

DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Yep.

IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
For a while, until I annoyed myself enough, then I'd drop me like a hot potato.

DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?
Surely you jest.

DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
Last time I checked... however I could've been kidnapped by aliens who may have secretly removed them for their own nefarious purposes. I'm not saying this did happen, just that it might have.

WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
OH HELL NO!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?
I don't eat cereal if I can help it. Cereal is for breakfast, breakfast is for morning... I don't do mornings. Although I do like Rice Crispy treats.

DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?
Only if they have laces - I don't try it with my slip on shoes anymore, people were looking at me funny.

DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
Compared to what?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?
Chocolate.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Whether the person is male or female. (bonus points if you can tell me the movie that comes from)

RED OR PINK?
RED - never ever ever Pink... EVER

WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF?
You mean of the plethora available to me... well, I guess...
That I can't remember anything longer than 10 seconds anymore.

WHAT COLOR PANTS AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING?
Blue jeans and black shoes.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?
A scone.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
The Roe Conn Show - on WLS - Chicago - over the internet. (I love my treo)

IF YOU WHERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE?
Blue - I have no idea why.

FAVORITE SMELLS?
My husband. (ha - didn't expect that did you)
Vanilla
Lemon
BTW - all those are separate - not mixed up together thank you.

WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
My husband - yesterday.

Light brown with highlights - some people insist it's blond.

Quite a number... I don't know what to pick. Maybe the crab cake they serve at one of the restaurants in the Chicago area... it's very yummy. Then again it could be Richmond's "crack mushrooms".

SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?
Oh happy endings - absolutely. There's enough scary endings in real life, thank you very much.

LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
Last of the Mohicans.

WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING?
Black... are you trying to be sneaky - asking about my clothes in several different places in this thing - and no I will not answer questions about underwear.

No shows - I did a movie.

FAVORITE SOUND?
I don't have any idea where to even start with this one.

ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES?
Good heavens - can we please move on? I'm so tired of both of these bands. Not that they aren't good - but honestly I'm over both of them. If I didn't hear either band for the next 10 years - maybe then I'd be happy to hear them again.

WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME?
Mexico... I'm the person who never goes anywhere. The Mexico trip was back when I was 14.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
Annoying people... I'm very good at it.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
In a hospital according to my mother - but she often gets things mixed up so who knows.

WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK?
Anyone who decides to answer.

It's TeeVee Time

We bought a new television yesterday. It took us months of looking, at different types and reading tons of stuff online about the various models, but we finally figured out what we should get (it's difficult because we LOVE old movies and many of the new televisions don't render a decent picture when playing back old black and white movies). Note to those of you who are old movie buffs - plasma... it's the only way to go currently. LCD is getting better, but it's not there yet.

Of course the purchase, hauling, setup, and all that took most of the day. It's exhausting to buy things anymore. (and I missed a call from this guy - drat it all) Luckily the thing only weighs 75 pounds - so my basic lack of upper body strength wasn't put to the test. Now all I have to do is get things rearranged in the television room. There are HUGE boxes everywhere and some displaced furniture.

Of course this isn't finished. We still need a new stand - the current stand is an old portable computer stand. It's too narrow and a little too tall. This will need to be fixed soon - the current stand worries me greatly. We need to get an HDTV box (although with the current old box the picture looks fabulous - this tells you how bad our old television was). We will also need a new DVD player... but that can wait - so far the picture from our supposedly crappy DVD player - looks excellent. And last off all we want to put in surround sound. Then I'll never have to hit the theaters again.

However, later today I plan on heading over to see the new Pirates movie. I haven't been to the theater since the last one came out. So, I'll go one last time.
