Just Because

Let's watch a little Top Gear...

The Toyota Prius vs the BMW M3

How about the Race Across London... in 3 parts... what's the fastest way?  Bike? Car? Public Transport?  Boat?  Who will win?

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

I was surprised and I laughed - of course.

Blogless friend Mirm sends me this story - telling tales on her own state...

State's sample license plate: What the...?

Last year, state officials notified nearly 10,000 holders of license plates with the letter combination "WTF" that they could get a replacement at no charge after officials learned that the combination is a common acronym in text messaging for a vulgar phrase, "What the ..."

I'm just guessing here, but it looks like they aren't a very tech-savvy crowd.  I especially like the length of time it will take to change the web site image...

But the absolute best bit

The DMV was alerted to the vulgar message last July when a 60-year-old technology teacher from Fayetteville complained about the plate. Her teenage grandchildren clued her in.

A technology teacher... without a clue... you have to wonder what her students are getting past her. Holy cow!

Wow! What a Day!

Today beloved husband and I went to an Aviation Museum and we had so much fun!  It's called the Collings Foundation - a private museum that's close to where we live.

A couple times a year they have a weekend Open House and Father's Day weekend is one of those times.  It was a blast!

Of course, I have TONS of pictures - I took over 400 (although I did have the camera set to "auto bracketing" so each time I shot, I got 3 pictures (in different exposures) and THAT will certainly eat up shots quickly.

The most delightful thing is - nearly all of my shots turned out to be pretty good!  I was shocked.  I expected to have maybe 1/3 be good enough - but there were only a couple of bad shots that I won't even consider working on.

I was very worried about the indoor pics because of the slow shutter speeds and no flash... On most of them I had the camera strap wound around in such a way that all I had to do was lift my right elbow and the strap was tight enough to keep thing still. If I had a very long shutter speed, I tried to drop to one knee and prop my elbow on my leg (since I had no tripod or monopod). It worked!!!  All my indoor shots were clear - although some were dark.

There were 2 planes flying today a PT-17 Stearman and an AT-6F Texan were busy taking people for rides.  We spent several hours out by the grass runway watching the take offs, landings, and some aerial acrobatics.  Inside they had a TBM Avenger (why would I mention this here when it wasn't flying?)  My FIL flew all three of these planes back in his Navy days.  He learned on the Stearman, got more work in the Texan, and was carrier qualified on the Avenger... pretty cool. He would have loved seeing all these planes in one place.

Pictures will be coming soon - at least as soon as I can do some processing on some of them.  I'm so glad I got my new camera!

And I think I'll have to donate some to the Collings  Foundation  -  they  have done some incredible work.  I love these old planes (and the old race cars aren't bad either!)

Busy With Camera Stuff

Damn I may need another category... but not for this.  I now have a page at Smugmug.  The pictures are higher resolution there and quite a bit bigger.

Those in "The Yard" folder haven't been posted here.  Mainly because they were taken today. I was so busy setting up the smugmug site and editing the orginal pics, I didn't get around to creating smaller images for blog posting.

Now I'm going to get away from this computer.  I'm tired of screens.

Out And About

With the new camera.

For all 3 or 4 readers I might have left after the last few weeks of intensely ignoring the blogosphere while studying... I thought I'd throw some pics at you from my new camera.

I have quite a lot to learn about it.  Today I basically opened the box, put in the battery and memory card and walked out the door.  I left nearly everything as it was except changing one setting from Auto to Programmed so the flash wouldn't pop up.  I messed up a ton of pictures, but a few turned out.

They are below the fold.

WooHoo - New Toy

Got myself a new camera today.  A Nikon D80 - it's very cool.

Beloved husband and I went for a 5 mile walk after charging the battery a bit.  We'll see what kind of pictures I ended up with.

At the moment I'm making dinner so I don't have time to upload them.  Anyhow, it's so cool to be able to actually see through the viewfinder and have some idea what I'm taking a picture of...

I Should Be Asleep

But I did take a nap this afternoon so I guess that's why I'm still up.  As I was laying there half asleep I had Top Gear on.  They were replaying the trip through Africa which is hilarious.

For some reason, bits of this make me think of Bou's boys in about 20 years or so...
