10 Good People for 2005

I have started and deleted this post several times in the last couple of days. I get about half way through it and just don't like what I've written... After reading my blog sis Bou's list today, I thought I'd take another crack at it. Maybe I can make it work.

So here is my list of 10 People who have done wonderful things for me this year. In no particular order... just thrown out there...

1) Matt of Blackfive as you may remember (or maybe not) back in April of 2005, my son's unit Big Windy, suffered a terrible loss of one of their aircraft in a storm. Every question I emailed to Matt, he was right on top of and got back to me immediately. It was a really LONG 2 and a half days before word came out on who was on board. Just being able to get information about how the Army works in such cases was a huge comfort.

2) Calivalleygirl I "met" via email at this time too. She has been outstanding. She emails me unit news, and has managed to get emails to me about other Chinook incidents before I ever heard about them on the news! I hope very much I'll get a chance to meet her one day and at least buy her dinner. She has been a lifesaver this year!

3) Paula Spivey - mother of one of the young men lost in the Big Windy accident. Her son Michael was a great friend of my son's. I can not begin to tell you what an inspiration she is, grace and courage under the very worst thing that can befall a mother. I am always amazed at the positive attitude of her emails.

4) Tammi who actually calls me on the phone and lets me blather on - even when I say such idiotic things as "I was going to tell you something, but I forgot what it was". I don't talk to many people in person or on the phone... so I'm always amazed that we can talk for so long together.

5) Chuck - my tai chi instructor back in Chicago. Bad bad jokes and all, tai chi helped keep me from going completely up the wall during the last year. I will never again find a group of people like them or a teacher like Chuck. It's the only thing I miss being out here on the East Coast.

6) and 7) Former neighbor Brian and wife Barb- they were excellent neighbors and gave us a lovely going away party before we left the old neighborhood.

8) and 9) New neighbors Doug and Carol who immediately invited us over for dinner when we moved in here. Gave us lots of information about the area and have been outstanding neighbors.

10) All my online friends fall into the last catchall. Although not technically in the spirit of naming an individual... It's a wonderful thing to have gotten to know so many terrific people over the last few years. Emails, phone calls, blogmeets - the internet has opened up an entire world of people who would otherwise never know each other. I have been very blessed to meet some of the greatest people in the world.

Thank you all for a wonderful year.

New Year and No Resolutions

It seems that the world is divided into 2 sets of people - those who make resolutions and those who do not.

I happen to fall into the "no resolutions" category. Maybe because I've never really understood them. If I decide I want to do something, it doesn't matter whether it's New Years or not - I determine the goal and then work out the steps to get there. Why I must do this at the beginning of a year is a mystery to me.

Most of the resolutions I see or hear involve something very vague...

- I want to lose weight
- I want to exercise more
- I want to keep my house clean

1)... how much weight do you want to lose? Do you have a time frame? How are you going to do it? What are your intermediate goals for weight loss?

2)... how much do you want to exercise? How many days a week? What is your goal for exercise... running so many miles? walking? weight lifting?

3).... what do you consider clean? Do you have to take a backhoe to the place and start over? do you need to throw stuff out? do you need to dust and vacuum?

You see, most people never address what they need to do to get to a goal. That's why they are so disappointed at the end of a year when they remember what last year's resolutions were and what they actually did about them.

As for me - I seem to be between goals at the moment. I don't like that too much, but it does happen at times. The move means that things like goals have been put on hold while I figure out where I am now and pull my life together in a new place. I'm a bit slow about these things... which is why it's a good thing we don't move more often.

There you have it - no New Year Resolutions. I'm sure I'll come up with some sort of goal soon. I have a few rolling around in my mind, when they become clearer, I'll set my sites on them and start working. In the meantime - do you make resolutions or not? If you do, are you successful at keeping them?
