Well That's A Relief

My husband did not get laid off yesterday.

Guess I'll shop for a new coat now that we don't have to live on my pay check alone. Heh.

It Seems Like It Was...

Isn't that how we all start off when we realize we've hit a milestone in our lives?

Yesterday my son turned 25 years old...  Good Lord!  As my husband said, "He's hit the quarter century mark".  Heh.

Twenty five years ago.  I had quit my job as a Neonatal ICU nurse because they were going to mess with my 3-11 shift and make me return to work, after maternity leave, doing 7pm-7am.  (nope - not me - I did a stretch of nights for 2 years while my husband was finishing school.  I liked the shift, but it played havoc with the rest of my life... nothing else runs on night shift it seems - more's the pity)

I had been working with babies weighing in at about 2 pounds. It had been over 4 years since my daughter was born and I was no longer used to dealing with normal newborns.  I was used to babies I could pick up and hold in 1 hand - head supported by the tops of my fingers, butt resting on my wrist.  Some were a bit larger heading up to the area of 4-5 pounds.  It was seldom that we had "normal weight" babies.  And then I got to go home at the end of my shift.

So, along comes my son.  All 10+ pounds of him and 23 inches long.  It was like having an instant toddler.   I kept looking at him and thinking - this isn't an infant, he's damn near full grown!

Well, not quite.  Full grown took a while and progressed rapidly apace (although there were times when I thought he'd never get there because I wanted to wring his neck).  He's now 6'4" and keeps himself fit at about 200lbs.

He's all grown up.  He has a girlfriend who is very nice.  He's given 6 years to the Army, seen quite a bit of the world in exchange, and he's learned a few things along the way.  In March he'll be headed back to the civilian world.  He wants some time back in the states (his entire Army stint has been overseas).  He wants to go to school.  And, while he's not exactly sure what he wants to major in, I'm not at all worried about him.  He can take care of himself.

25... Wow... Doesn't seem quite possible.
