Men With Chainsaws
Four men armed with chainsaws showed up at my house today. They were here to deal with the aftermath of the December ice storm. Part 1 - cutting and stacking - took them 4 hours of steady work.
The amazing part is how insubstantial the branches look in pictures. You look and think "piece of cake" just move them. But they are incredibly heavy. Some branches had pieces stuck nearly a foot into the ground.
Some could be dragged, many had to be cut up before it was safe to move them.

They are working on the very large limb we had been afraid would end up crashing through the house. Luckily it fell straight down, however it needed to be cut up and removed from the hillside.

So they started piling.

And cutting.

And hauling.

And cleaning.

And creating stacks of sticks.

Massive stacks of sticks.

All the way down the driveway.

And around the corner.

And up the neighbor's side.
Tomorrow they'll be back with the woodchipper. When they are done, all the extraneous wood will be gone. This makes me very happy.
We'll be able to have the grass cut this summer. Not to mention fertilize. I was a bit worried about that.
Luckily (so to speak) the guy who runs the lawn service is terrific. And most of his customers had no storm damage. We go to the head of the list. Our yard gets cleaned up, I write a check, neither my husband or I end up in the hospital with a bad back.
That works.

Awesome! Do they haul away the chips or do you keep it as mulch? Either way it's a win-win.

Luckily they haul it away - we'd have enough chips to cover the town with the amount of wood we have. Unfortunately there is quite a lot of pine in the stacks of wood. I have no idea, but I don't think it's good for mulch.
