This Is The Way to Start The Day
Email from young son - he's back in Germany. Done with the Iraq tour.
Of course, he has leave all planned, but since we are dealing with the Army, it's possible those plans will change. Still awaiting word on that. Ho-hum.
I'll take it - out of the war zone is good.

Update on the Crash
Just found this article which was posted only a little while ago.
4 Texans, 3 Oklahomans among those killed in IraqI will assume that this is correct. Of course that makes it certain it wasn't young son. But there are families out there who need all our prayers right now.

The sacrifices that these service men and women make...I'm just awed, saddened, devastated, and so honored that they would give up their young lives to protect ours.
The best thing about flying into Atlanta, the few times I've done it, is the amount of military peeps I get to see, and shake their hands, and really get to thank them for this amazing service they provide for our country.
I've really no words beyond that which can express how sad I am to hear of the news of these National Guardsmen killed in the crash. It is definitely the supreme sacrifice...to die preserving liberty.
Bless their souls, and God protect their families.
Sigh.

Teresa, my son is in northern Iraq with the Oklahoma National Guard, they are supposed to be back by the end of next month. This was his 3rd deployment, 1st to Bosnia, 2nd to Afghanistan, he has 22 years of service and is getting too old for this stuff...
Hope all is well with your son and he comes home soon, as all of our service personnel who so deserve...

Jerry - I think you have the tougher job. With all the ground incidents to worry about. Although as publicized as the aircraft crashes are - I'm not sure which is worse sometimes. There are thankfully fewer of them.

Oh This is So Not Good
Just saw it...
5 U.S. soldiers killed in helicopter crash in IraqUPDATE: Make that 7 soldiers.
It's a Chinook.
Last I heard young son was in Taji just north of Baghdad, stuck there in bad weather. Don't know anything more. I do know he was due to be out of there soon, but he never is talkative so we only get bits and pieces.
As usual we'll just have to wait. *sigh*
UPDATE2: No news which is "good news" so far.

Dreadful. I pray with all my heart that he is out of harm's way and...in the meantime...I shall wait with you in spirit.
Encouraging, somewhat, is that 15 miles "north of Baghdad" is a long way aways from "60 miles west of Basrah." More than half the country, and it's a huge country.
*fingers crossed*, T.

A Very Cool Group of Vets
Go have a look,
I met these guys a couple weeks ago when my husband and I went out to Mount Wauchusett. It was Labor Day weekend mid afternoon (as you can tell by the sun glare) and I even had a polarized filter on my lens - it was really really bright!
I took the second picture on the page. A group shot of all of them, so one wouldn't have to miss being in the group. They were terrific. It was great meeting them all. Although I did mention I mostly shoot landscapes so I might have done better if they were all trees. Heh.

Great shot of them! I take mostly landscape or object photos, and my Dad recently asked me to photograph his high school's 55th reunion. Heavy responsibility, not to mention the fact that, Hey Dad, did you notice I never take pictures of people????

Seaweed - ROFLMAO - thank goodness I'm not alone. Taking pictures of people is hard work.

I had never read this but I am not surprised. Protecting children is what we do. Sometime in the first few days of Boot Camp a leatherfaced (and leather lunged) Master Gunnery Sergeant told us that the purpose of the peacetime Marine Corps was to take bullets for civilians.

I agree with Peter. I hadn't heard but I am not surprised. Love me some Marines.

Word From Young Son
He's moving from regular base housing to transition housing - getting into the tear down and move back to Germany phase. AND he has his leave dates for coming home. I figured I wouldn't get those until 3 days ahead of time. heh.
Tomorrow (after an all day meeting) I'll be busy making plane reservations.
This time we'll be heading to Chicago to get together with both kidlets. Then back here for a week before he heads back to Germany. Whirlwind.
Woot!
