24 - Or the Saga of the Screwed Up Family

And I thought my family was bad...

No, those who don't want to read it don't have to. The rest beneath the fold. Okay, they had me - I figured Jack's old man was one of the good guys who was doing bad things to protect his son. Turns out that both the dad and the creepy bald brother are raging psycho's - who knew? No wonder Jack likes working for CTU - it's pretty sane compared to his family.

So it starts out that Jack and daddy are supposed to be killed, but naturally they get away and go back to creepy brother Graem's house. The wife and son get sent to CTU (seems the entire world ends up there one way or another). Jack interrogates his brother but doesn't use the better tactic of shooting him in the knees - he uses IV drugs and then feels bad about it. Graem then confesses he ordered the assassinations of the late President Palmer and some CTU peeps. This pisses off Jack... but not enough to actually do anything but knock over the chair Graem is tied to (c'mon Jack! you can do better than that!!!).

One look at daddy who just happens to be looking through the door as Jack's about to blow out Graem's brains and Jack doesn't kill the little bastard. How is it that daddy seems to be able to wander about a secure site with impunity? CTU's definition of a secure perimeter is extremely elastic... Oh well. What else is new?

But Graem still knows something - we don't know what. I'll give this guy credit for having one of the creepiest little smiles around.

Morris gets lured out of CTU with a call saying his brother was caught in the nuclear blast. Naturally CTU finds out that it's a fake just after Morris has driven out of the parking lot. Turns out he's "the expert" that can arm the rest of the nukes. Well of course he is! Who else would it be. And even more naturally, the McCarthy character that everyone is looking for, gets to Morris just as he finds out about the deception. Now Morris has been kidnapped and is on his way to Fayed. Just dandy.

In the meantime, even though the icky Lennox (lowlife Presidential aide) has gotten rid of Karen as a Presidential advisor, he is doomed to disappointment in trying to make the Pres turn the US into one large detention facility for all Muslims. In a room full of cabinet members, Palmer tells them all (including his weaselly Veep via conference call) that he has no intention of following Lennox's plan. It will be interesting to see if this means they'll try to kill him. That's very likely why his brother was taken out last season. Of course it was lovely to see the stunned expression on the face of Lennox.

Unfortunately the Pres only changes his mind because his idiot sister - who makes me want to slap her, is on the phone wailing about how scared she is and having philosophical conversations about the Constitution in the middle of a crisis. (Have you got this now? The President won't listen to Karen who presents a reasonable argument, but makes a decision because he feels bad for his sister... so far President Palmer's only saving grace is that he's easy on the eyes. He doesn't seem to have any idea of what the right thing to do might be)

Last of all, we find out that daddy has been in cahoots with Graem all along... he is actually the brains behind whatever is going on. He has attempted to either kill or totally incapacitate Graem so he can't be questioned. What I can't understand is why the CTU guys leave daddy in the room alone with a person who is still going to be interrogated and is therefore a suspect in the whole mess. How is it that CTU agents ever get anything done?

Previews for next week show large explosions and much gun fire. Wonder what they're shooting up now. Final thought: this week was somewhat better than last week. At least it wasn't quite so sappy - but geeze I hope Jack isn't going to wimp out the entire season.

1 Well... I didn't fall asleep this week.

After Dad capped the bad guy at the pit I knew something was wrong... I told Arthur "Dad's in the big leagues, a top echelon bad guy... we just don't know it yet".
It's the first time I've been right, so that tells me the writing [or acting] is a little too transparent this season...
