Hitting the Road or the Air or Something
Tomorrow I am pulling out the suitcase and heading south... only for the weekend and not because they are predicting snow.
It's time once again for the annual
Hysterics at Eric's. My husband, who forgoes these events, will have a nice quiet weekend at home.
This year
the Jooese is making her way south in the company of
Jimbo (he of the "big fat black capitalist car"). So I shall swoop into Atlanta, swing by the
Casa de Elisson, meet up with the man himself and his lovely wife, attach them to my posse, and off we will head into the middle of Tennessee. It will be a blast and half!
If you follow me on
twitter, stay tuned for random tweets from the airport (where there are always fun and interesting things happening). I can even blog because my blog software now works with my ipad! Very cool indeed.
So everyone have a lovely lovely weekend.

Joos make excellent traveling companions -- you will be in fine company with Elisson & SWMBO. Also, Jimbo, I've been informed, ditched the BFBCC in favor of
The Blaccura (a black Accura). Two dooshbags on the open road. It'll be 12+ hours of Jackie was safe (which he was) vs. Jackie was out. God help us all.

Herding Cows - Jersey Style
This is what happens when you let 2 New Jersey boys and a Brooklyn girl loose in the wilds of Tennessee farm country.

The Hysterics were Hysterical As Always - Part 2
Let's pick up where we left off... arriving at the
Straight White House.
We were greeted with food (courtesy of Bou who made an outstanding dinner) and drink and merriment. It was too cold and wet to sit outside. Rain and sleet had put the kibosh on the campfire, so everyone was gathered indoors. Either in the house itself or in the garage - home to a terrific pocket pool table.
It is mostly a gathering of long acquainted friends with the yearly addition of one or two people. Of course we have already met up with
Erica and
Leslie. To this was added:
Eric (of course)
Denny
Elisson & SWMBO
John Cox
Jerry
El Capitan
Bou
K-Nine
Rick & Georgia
Jimbo & Da Bodyguard
Later that night Eric's lovely wife Fiona arrived home from work to find her house taken over.
There was much talking in loud voices, many pool games complete with trash talking, and lots of cameras. Sadly I am not a good people photographer so even if people wanted their pictures online, mine mostly didn't turn out well. Give me some trees and scenery every time.
As Denny was leaving the gathering to get back to the hotel, he noticed that a car had a flat tire... well, you guessed it boys and girls. The little icon on the dash was telling me there was a leak and while we were having a merry time, the air quietly left the tire. How I was supposed to know that from the icon on the dash... it's a mystery to me.
Bou kindly gave me a ride both to the hotel that night and back to Eric's the next morning. Saturday morning being the day that
Big Stupid Tommy finally made it to the party. Eric woke up early on Saturday and proceeded to change the tire on my car and call the car rental place. (he is the best of the best folks)
I was able to take the car to a local shop. While they fixed it, we were off to the local diner for breakfast. They do the best buffet for breakfast ever. The coffee cups don't match, but the food is excellent and the ambiance is unequaled anywhere.
After picking up my car, there was shopping at a local Fair Trade store, pool, music provided by The Elderly Brothers (Jimbo and Denny accompanied most ably by John who is far to young to be an Elderly). Add to that the most delicious BBQ ever smoked on a huge smoker in Eric's back yard. Elisson did the honors and completely blew our socks off.
It's always sad to see Saturday draw to a close. Denny, Jimbo, Kenny, Georgia and Rick all took off early Sunday morning. Erica, Leslie and I had to head out fairly early, but we were able to stop by Eric's for a quick and very good breakfast.
The drive back to ATL was non-eventful, except for the few minutes of panic when I couldn't figure out if I was still on the right highway when in the middle of downtown. Since I didn't have much wiggle room in timing, I was very happy to find I hadn't detoured on to another highway by accident.
We returned the car and then of course I had to wait in line at the office to have them give me the money for the tire repair. After we got into the terminal and got our boarding passes, we had some lunch. This was not the best choice I could have made. Lunch service was slow and I still had to get through security. However, while we were eating we were treated to a group of soldiers headed home on leave - as they walked through the terminal, everyone gave them a rousing ovation. It was wonderful.
I arrived at the gate just as they were boarding the last "zone" on the plane. Whew! I really don't like cutting it that close. No one even looked twice at my carry on bag this time. It fit fine in the overhead. Good grief!
Other than a little turbulence it was an uneventful flight. Once again I was too tired to do much people watching.
Thus endeth another Hysterics.

The Hysterics were Hysterical As Always - Part 1
Blogmeets - there's nothing like 'em. It will take a few days for me to recover. OTOH What a wonderful trip!
I should have left on Thursday evening and spent the night in Atlanta - that would have made Friday a bit less...um... hectic. It would also have negated arising before the crack of dawn to head to the airport. However, I did manage to snag the 8:30am shuttle from Framingham to Logan. After that I was fine for catching my flight out.
At Logan I was treated to the brand new full body scan. Joy. You might want to go looking for the resultant naughty bits on one of those warez sites... "Logan Bodies" or whatever.
Anyhow, the only good thing... we were allowed to put away the boarding pass and id before the scan. I hate having to try and hold onto those with one hand while taking off shoes, pulling off coats, unwinding scarves, unpacking liquids, pulling out computers, putting everything in bins and guiding it down rollers to the conveyor. I'm always amazed when I can do this without everything hitting the floor. This time I was able to zip it all in my bag and use both hands.
I was pretty tired and not into people watching once I got to the gate. However, I will take a moment to note the following...
Wearing a white button down shirt, plaid mini skirt, black tights, high top lace up shoes with high heels, and little fur cuffs around your ankles, does not work for anyone - period - no matter how skinny you might be. Moreso if you are obviously over the age of 45... (it wouldn't work for a 7 year old). Just sayin...
Of course the idiots at Delta decided I had to check my carry on bag. Why? Well why not! It's the same size as all the others, but that was not good enough for them. They insisted I gate check it. Had I been more wide awake, I would have taken the tag off of it while headed down the ramp and just taken it on the plane - but I was not thinking at all. Much to my detriment.
My flight landed at 2pm in ATL only a few minutes late. I met
Erica and
Leslie after much texting and phoning. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited... eventually my bag arrived. We dashed off to rent a car and get on the road already. We snagged a Dodge Caliber - it worked well for 3 + bags. Everyone was starving (it was now well after 3pm) so we stopped to eat. This put us square into rush hour. Lovely.
Back on the road... We finally break free of the "stop and goes" and we're moving along when a light appears on the dash with a ding. An icon lights up. It appears to be a horseshoe shape with the open end up and little hashes under it and an exclamation point in the middle. I found a pic - have a look:

I guess it's used in other cars since we were certainly not in a vette of any kind. It looks like it's telling me my luck is running out - tithe now to the church of Dodge...
We looked for a book to see what it might be - of course there is no book in a rental car. We drove on figuring we'd find out what it was when something broke or the car stopped - whichever came first.
It was about this time Erica started receiving texts from
Jimbo's friend Da Bodyguard asking us where we were. (Not even half way sadly enough.) Then we hit stopped traffic - total halt all lanes. There was an accident of course and they stopped traffic to life-flight the driver out. Can't really complain about stopped traffic for us when someone else ended up in critical condition. About half an hour later we were on our way again.
There was much trash talk texting going on between Da Bodyguard and Erica to keep us entertained. And we finally made it to the hotel where we checked in and freshened up for the main part of the evening. We arrived at Eric's at about 8:45pm.
Thus endeth part one. With the moral being - it's always best to avoid traveling with me.

That dash light is something about your tire inflation, I guess?

We have a new Honda Pilot that has one of those lights. It's a tire pressure warning. When the weather got cooler here, that fargin' light came on once a day for four days - once for each tire (in mine there's a display that shows the area of concern). I just inflated until the light went out.

Yep, that was a tire pressure warning. Nothing to really get excited about right away.

Nice seeing you again.

Sounds like a fairly routine trip through Security Kabuki at the airport ... more's the pity. We'd not fly at all, except for the niggling little fact that we're so dang far away from everything. It's over 1300 miles to Seattle from here, and that's the closest U.S. airport. That turns into a 3-day drive, and the roads aren't always passable ... feh.
Then of course there's my current vacation in Honolulu ... you're flying, pardner, and there's no gettin' around it. At least it's a non-stop. Have I mentioned I hate layovers?
Basically, Denny is correct. A friendly airline company makes up for some of the inconvenience, but that only goes so far.
Glad you had a good time & enjoyed the company there. I look forward to part 2.

I was recently driving home to Los Angeles from Vegas, and ALL my dashboard lights came on at the same time with much beeping. I was still a good 60 miles or so from home, it was about 100 degrees out, and my air conditioning had also stopped working.
Amazingly, I was able to make that car limp all the way home and was able to sort of finally coast into my parking lot before it gave up the ghost completely. Phew!
It only cost me $1600 to get back on the road again. Eeeek!
(Always buy the extended warranty if you plan to drive a lot!)
Can't wait to read part 2 of the hysterics. I'm sooo jealous!

It looks like it's saying HOT EMPTY VESSEL! Caps as it has that exclamation point. I think that's what my low pressure light looks like. I've had a ton of lights on in my car... classic was the time my husband had a light pop on his Audi and he scrambled for me to look it up as we were driving down the street... 7 miles from home. I said, "It's caution, drive to a dealership immediately." Then another light popped on and he said, "Wait! What's that?!" and I read... "Stop... the... car. Do... not... drive..." Bones was going bat crap crazy. That fiasco cost us 5K. We got rid of the car shortly thereafter. Don't drive German cars past 75K.

Sheri - maybe you're right and we were lucky not to get sucked into another dimension... or maybe we were and that's where the blogmeets happen...
Mr. Bingley! You should have come over to say hello. I would have ignored the fur ankle cuffs... really I would have.
Julie and Dave - yes the tire story is next.
Rev Paul - sadly that's the problem with living in a remote spot. But Alaska is pretty so you have that. LOL.
DDP - glad you made it home rather than having to get the car towed.
Bou - my Audi has over 115K on it - going just fine. Of course it helps that my husband keeps up with all the latest "problems" encountered by reading the forums. I'm still laughing about the HOT EMPTY VESSEL! Love it!

The Draher Faher
When one attends blog meets, one expects that *ahem* interesting things will be happening. There will be stories for the ages.
And so it was with this blog meet which will likely be known by posterity as the "blog meet of the draher faher".
After arising at 6am on Friday, travel all day, an evening of revelry ending in the wee hours at around 3am. A Saturday starting at 8:30am and ending around 1:30am... I was looking forward to sleeping until 8:30 Sunday morning when I planned to drag out of bed and head to Eric's for the Sunday morning breakfast.
Well, that was the plan until...

It didn't take burning laundry (which, by the way, is the name my new bongo trio) to make this trip memorable, but it didn't hurt. The food, the company and the haunting reports of firearms echoing through the Tennessee hills was plenty.
Then the cop said, "Hey, sugarpants, where's the fire?"
Great meeting ya, Teresa!

And how about the day before the morning of the draher faher Cox, Denny & Hairboy trying to think of songs with the word "Fire" in it? I mean, toowalk about irony! Holy f**k.
More irony: "My Cousin Vinny" on in Eric's & the Missus' living room, and how many times throughout he film was Pesci vaulted out of bed pre-dawn because of a loudly rumbling freight train / deafening whistle / screeching owl / rooster...
Case of life imitating art, that.

A loud rumbling freight train? Like the one that traveled through my room on queue every couple hours or so? Choo Choo! Nothing like a good Draher Faher to start off the last day of a blogmeet. Actually, I am glad it was a fire, because if someone had pulled the alarm . . . I'd have had to hurt someone - probably Mr. Mumbles from the front desk!

Damn straight, Oddy. We shoulda kicked the asses of the dooshwads who thought it was somehow acceptable to place a man who can barely freaking walk on the second floor, in the event of a draher faher. I'll ask, again, as I so frequently do: What is WRONG with people?!

Oddy... I almost yanked an alarm just for the helluv it after it was already going off. I figured WTF? I've never done this before.
It was funny watchin' John retrieve his foot cover. He looked... awkward tryin' to sock and shoe up walkin' down the hallway. Finally told him to hit my room, STFD, and put his stuff on right.
We lived. I figured we would.
Things to add to my travel bag... Duct Tape, and Super Glue.
The duct tape is so I can put a wash cloth over that red speaker and shut it up, and the Super Glue is so I can get the damned batter cover back on the smoke detector.

I Was Promised A Non-Smoking Room***
Back from the wilds of Tennessee where there were many exciting things happening this last weekend.
The
Straight White house once again opened its doors to many a blogger. I shall not attempt to give you an accounting of what was happening because it was epic and I don't have the pixels to accommodate such a story.
So here are a few of the highlights.
- It took 5 hours for Thelma and
Joo-ese to get from Atlanta to Eric's front door.
- I got a speeding ticket... yes, out in the middle of nowhere a cop stopped me in front of a 55mph sign telling me I had been speeding in a 40mph zone.
- I did not go shooting at the range after the ticket. Dealing with a cop is enough for the weekend, didn't want to deal with the TSA too
- It takes 2.5 hours to get Joo-ese out the door when it's time to go back to the hotel... therefore we got to the hotel at 3am the first night (or is that morning)
-
Bou,
Oddy,
Richmond,
Elisson, SWMBO (wife of Elisson), and
Eric are all terrific cooks
- Morrigan (sister of Bou) is 6 months pregnant and introducing the baby to blogging early. I predict great things from this child after hanging with this group
- the
Elderly Brothers are excellent and made even better when
Dax and
John add their own touches to the mix. (yes that would be John Cox of
Cox and Forkum - amazing the peeps you meet at Eric's)
- being awakened by a fire alarm about an hour and a half before my alarm was due to go off was an interesting way to start the day. Tomorrow there shall be pictures and story of this event. (well, one picture at least)
Now I'm off to bed. I do need to try and get some little bit of sleep before attempting to work tomorrow.
*** title of this post is courtesy of John Cox who told me it would be a good title when I mentioned this out in the parking lot while the firemen were putting out the fire.

"I Was Promised a Non-Smoking Room" <--- That is hysterical. It was memorable, for sure. Except for the (ahem) parts that I don't remember. These blogmeets, T...they are an Extreme Sport unto themselves. Whew! And it was great seein' ya again, my Little Speed Demon.

Blogmeets, good peeps, hotel fires - in some strange twisted way it all goes together quite well. So glad to see you again! Glad you made it home safely, without anymore speeding tickets or layovers!

I assume you say "I was promised a non-smoking room" in Milton's voice (that would be
put-upon Milton in the movie Office Space, of course).
I was told that I could listen to the
radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told Bill that if
Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I
should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't
see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening
at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

Look Ma - There Really IS a New Jersey!
I have been trying to find time to write even a short post about the recent foray into the urban jungle that is New Jersey. Details of the efforts to clear the way in order to find the trail taking me to the place where bloggers converged... well that takes time (something that has been in short supply the past few weeks).
Therefore I decided I better get my act together and get it posted now or it would never get done. And it certainly deserves to be a journey immortalized in the mists of the blogosphere. (I traveled, I met people, and I returned... all of these are remarkable things)
I'm going to put the rest below the fold because I believe this will get long. If you aren't interested - be sure to skip it.

It was a pleasure meeting you, too, T. As for Jimbo and Kenny knowing where all the bodies are burried...NO ONE knows where ALL the bodies rest. Just ask the Hoffas.
This was my first meet but after reading about the one down in GA last fall, I had to give it a go. Not nearly enough time to talk at length with all that were there, so I guess I'll have to attend another! ;-)

Listen, this reminds me...you

About As Spur of the Moment As I Ever Get
So what's it like in Joisey in April? I'll be finding out. Our man on the
Parkway and
Fausta are putting their heads together to create a Joisey meet up.
In the space of a few hours of frenetic emails with
Erica, plans were completed and most details fixed up. Now all I have to do is find the train station. (easier said than done around here, but I have time)

Filling Up the Weekend
How do you fill up a weekend if you have a bunch of bloggers and they aren't near a computer?
Well, there is food (mostly grilled), adult beverages (some of a very green color), music (the best kind - homemade), pool (with a cue), local tourism (dairies and corn mazes), campfires... yes many things going on all at once.
If you haven't seen it yet, Bou has the story of
the corn maze - of course
a picture is worth 1000 words.
Jerry has the story of the
hay and straw bales.
The
Elderly Brothers never fail to entertain with their excellent and fun music.
I'm still waiting for
Erica to emerge from her depression and start telling the stories as she remembers them.
There is always Tennessee football although I find the orange of the uniforms rather disturbing.
I mustn't forget flying monkeys... definitely flying monkeys.
When bloggers get together, you never know what will happen. That's why it's so fun.

Re:
"I'm still trying to figure out if Atlanta is ashamed of its airport." If it's not, then it freaking should be! ::sigh:: It is absolutely gigantic, and retrieving ones luggage from an airport large enough to claim its own zip code, or eco-system, is about as thrilling as being rained on by bricks.
As I've said before, traveling with you was certainly an adventure, tons of fun, and I'd definitely do it again, so long as you take lots of Thorazine beforehand.
I mean that with love, of course.

Travels With The Wiseass Jooette (aka Erica) - Part 1
The trip to the
Straight White house was accomplished in 2 major steps. First I caught a direct flight to Atlanta. (from Boston, this is the closest airport with direct flights, thus it was chosen) Second was the drive from Atlanta to Tennessee. It was the second leg of the trip that was by far the most entertaining.
Once again... book length compels me to put the rest below the fold.

You Wouldn't Believe Me If I Told You
As I mentioned in Thursday's post, I headed down south to yet another Ultimate Blog meet.
Eric is truly the ambassador of the blog world. He and his wonderful wife Fiona have, yet again, hosted a bunch of the nicest bloggers out there and made us all feel like part of the family. They have the gift - indeed they do.
Most of the bloggers I had at least met before, but I do get to add a
new blogger to my "bloggers I've met roll. (YAY!!! I love that!)
Bou, her sister Morrigan, and
Stephanie (who has not been blogging lately) all arrived together.
Denny was there and when we start talking, the geekiness level rises considerably. (I can't tell you how fun that is)
Johnny-Oh made it, taking time off from installing elevators to come hang out. He was the only one to camp in Eric's back yard. (Bou mentioned that the contraption he slept in looked like a coffin on wheels when it was all folded up). Of course
Jimbo and Da Bodyguard both arrived in style via the big fat black capitalist car.
Jerry, who I hadn't yet met, made the trip down, along with farmer overalls and bales of hay and straw (more on this later). It was wonderful to meet him, he is very very funny. This year I was able to say more than a word or two to
Big Stupid Tommy, one of the funniest bloggers out there and a terrific guy. Non-bloggers who arrived and added to the fun (that I met) Rick & Georgia livened things up on Saturday. Gary & Connie who I, very sadly, did not get much time to do more than say hi to... maybe next year. Eric says Joshua and Charlie were there, but somehow I missed them, although it's possible I said hello to them the first night, just as I arrived, dazed and confused.
Saving the best for last I finally met
Erica who gets a post of her own because driving with her is so much fun.
We left Eric and Fiona ready to collapse after the weekend of reveling and
unlike other people, my brain was too fried to post anything until now.
More details are forthcoming - there are stories to tell, especially the bits about those
city folk having their first encounters with country living.

definitely need to lay off the freaking coffee! Energy is the LAST thing you need.
I left a comment anyways, even though I said I was too exhausted to do so. Damn, you tricked me.
