Don't Mean to be Neglectful

Not sure where the time is going. I should start watching minutes like other people watch calories.  Except, the reason I could never watch calories is that I get bored after about 15 minutes and move on to something else...

Anyhow, maybe it's the end of summer, or I'm trying to think of too many divergent things at once.  I  haven't had much impetus to write longer posts lately.  

Add to this, I will be heading to a photo workshop soon. While I'm there, I can't post here, not even comments.  My ipad does not let me post on my own website... go figure... and I am NOT hauling a regular computer with me when I have to take photo gear too!

So, if you want to check and see if I've got short posts (let's call them postlets), head over to my Posterous site.  It's much easier to take a pic with the iphone and throw a few words at it than it is to spew out longer pieces ... at least for now.  I'm sure I'll be back to posting more stuff soon for those who still check in.

Hey all - is anyone getting a "you've been banned" error if you try to comment?  I know I haven't been posting much to comment on lately, but I wanted to check since it has come up.  No I haven't set up any bans at all.

Let's Add a Bit More

Tomorrow I get my iphone!  Woot!  So I set up a posterous site**.  That will let me post text and pictures then tweet it.  We'll see how it works.  If you want to see a picture of one of the rhododendron flowers in my front yard, check it out over there. 

** I know I already deleted the Eat Like a Human Blog because I couldn't find time for it. I hope I can find time for this.

Testing the Text

Well Pixy had to do some finagling to get my blog working with the iPad.

Because the mobile iOS is so funky I have to do everything in text. But... I have text-expander and I am persistent.

So let's see if I can create a link. How about to Trey Ratcliff's fantastic site Stuck In Customs.

Then let me put up a picture that you can click to embiggen.



Okay well looks like my new stuff works even if it's a bit of extra work on the ipad. Now all I have to do is get the browser working right. I just checked and while it worked yesterday... today... not so much. Back to the drawing board I guess.

I Think We've Been Moved

The munu blogs of course.  I think Pixy moved us to a new server.  Not 100% sure, but everything was verrrry funky for a while.  Blog gone, then partially back.  Now all the way back - yay!

Whoa!

I did an update and things kinda changed... not sure what happened so I guess I need to noodle around with stuff and get it back to where it was.  *sigh* 
 
MORE:
Yeah, I hit an update button which is just a silly thing to do - what was I thinking?  Or not thinking as the case may be.  Don't know.  Now I'll have to see if I can figure out what happened to all the stuff from my sidebar - although I think I know - just need to do some adding and rearranging of boxes. Done! Although I do need to work on my sidebar stuff... geeze. 

The one thing I haven't figured out is where my categories went  They are still out there - but I seem to have lost the tag in my individual posts.  That might be a bit more difficult to figure out. . Got it!
 
Last of all the color of my links changed. Now I have to figure out if I want to keep it this way (I think not) or what I had before so I can change it back. All Fixed  Goodie. 

And those who still read my blog already know how often I like to change things...

Well that was pretty quick.  Kinda scared me for a minute.

PS - yes I changed the pic in my title bar.  It IS supposed to be Spring whether it wants to be or not.

Soon I Hope

Not this week, but I hope next week, I can get working on my blog roll.  It's so out of date.  I mostly browse from my feed reader now and I keep forgetting to update my blog.  (oh okay -  I don't forget - it's just a  PITA  to go messing about with it and I'm  farookin' lazy)

Sooo... after the blog meet when I can add yet more peeps to the "bloggers I've met", I will also be adding some of the others who have made it into my reader but not my sidebar. 

I know I'm a slug - I apologize.

Connections

Only in the world of blogs could this happen. 

Yesterday I received an email from blogless friend Sue reading in part:

Have you heard anything in the news about people with MA licenses (I'm thinking professional not driving) having had a security breach? I swear I saw a crawl on yesterday's news but can't find a story anywhere...

No, I hadn't heard anything and I went poking around a bit.  Didn't find anything, but that's because even with searches - it does matter what you're searching for!

This morning I was making my usual perusal of Instapundit and came across this post.  It led me to a post by Giacomo, who linked to a post by Jay Tea, who linked to a Boston Globe story.

And thus I found the information Sue was looking for. 

I also ended up with this question...

If you are required by law to have a professional license to conduct your business, why can't you opt out of having your information sold to marketers?

The division normally copies disks for various marketing agencies that request the information under the state's public records law, Jones said.

I thought the public records aspect of things was so the public could check on licenses to be sure the person who says they have a license... actually has one. I can see that marketers have used the availability of this information in order to boost their mailing lists.  Oh goody. 

Once again - the law of unintended consequences kicks in.  But the state doesn't care. They get money from the people having to get the licenses.  Then they get money from the people buying the addresses.  It's a win-win for everyone but the licensee who ends up getting the shaft all the way around.

This is also bothersome:

Officials said the last two disks, which contain the information of 16,000 licensed professionals, are still in the mail.

Wonderful, so now there are a couple of disks still floating about... what if they aren't recovered.  What happens then?  Do you think the state of Massachusetts is  going to even bother to notify the people involved?  How about compensate them for having to lock down their accounts and keep an eye on them for the next 10 years?

No.  I don't think they'll do anything at all, especially as it doesn't profit the government in any way.

Feed Readers

It has been brought to my attention that there are people who would rather be beaten within an inch of their lives than leave a comment here like:

"Wow you moved... my feed reader isn't picking your site up anymore". 

Or even dropping me an email to let me know it's a problem.

That being the case, if there's one person with that issue who won't say anything, there are probably others too.  Therefore:

If you have a feed reader - the change to this new blog software means you will have to add this blog back on to your reading list. (you can delete the old entry)

It's just like adding a new blog to your list. You can do one of 2 things.

1. - scroll down the side bar to the RSS and Atom buttons, click on one of them, add to your reader
2. - use the "add new feed" in the particular reader you use.

Template

I finally figured out (again) how to get to the basic template in order to play with it.  Odd things may happen while I do this.  One thing I want to try is a wider main posting column.  Not sure how that will work, so stay tuned.  I may also play with fonts - don't know yet. 

I did find some color for the sidebar - which makes it look different from the main posting column - that works for me.

Unfortunately, I won't know how things look until I try it.  And - I have a nice big monitor... soooo what works for me width-wise, may not work so well for others.  Stay tuned... or not.

Pixy Rocks!

I have email addy's now.  Yay!  That's just excellent.  (I'm wondering if he slept at all last night - or should I say last night his time)

In other news: If you notice in the Side bar, I've put a link at the top to my most "hit" post.  Yes, from 2005!  Pictures my son sent when he was deployed in Afghanistan - I generally get about 5 hits daily for those, even after all this time! Amazing.

Unfortunately, with the move, the original link is no longer valid and gets an error.  I dropped a comment on it at B5's place, and then put the link at the top of the side bar as it deserves a place of honor. 

Other internal links (links I put in posts to other posts I've written) won't be good either.  I'll either fix them if issues come up about it or ignore them.  Probably I'll ignore them unless someone gets on my case about it.

Also, posting has been very fast. A huge improvement over MT.

UPDATE: I have categories now too!  Yay!!!

Work Is In Progress

I'm sure if you keep coming back to read, you'll notice I'm slowly working away at setting things up. 

The first glitch I've run into is that although there is a comment page showing all the comments that have been made, I don't receive an email of comments and I'm not seeing the email addys entered by those commenting.  I have an email of my own in to Pixy.  I knew comments wouldn't be mailed out - but it will be a problem for me if I can't see the email addys of those posting as I do email back sometimes on comments.

The second glitch is minor - while I have all my categories on the side bar, they are not showing up in the posting drop down box.  Once again an email to Pixy I think he's working on it. 

I piece-mealed my blog roll from my old one.  There was tons of overlap.  It would not be surprising if I missed blogs when I was loading those up, even though I was trying to get everyone.  I also need to add a couple of blogs too, but today I was only doing a copy and paste.  If your blog was on my side bar and now it isn't, let me know and I'll put it back.  Right now my eyes are crossing from jick-jacking around with all this. It's not hard - there's just lots of small things and it's easy to overlook stuff.

Last of all - if you read from an RSS feed - did it switch over okay?   I'm just wondering.
