Patchy - Patchy

A big Java update was released today.  It's time to patch that Java on your pc's.  Why? Because the holes being patched can be exploited simply by surfing to a website with malware java script. It can even be a reputable website that is unknowingly hosting java malware ads.

If you turned off auto updates because they are a PITA (yes I turned mine off), then go to Control Panel and type "Java" into the search box to find it.  Click the update tab and then the "update now" button to get started.  It's pretty quick and you don't have to do a restart which is nice.

On Mac you'll have to wait until Apple releases an update.

1 Huh. I must not even have it. Went to Control Panel and searched Java and only got help stuff about how to install Java for IE and whatever.

2 I'm guessing since you rolled your own you didn't add java to the mix.  Unless you feel a real need to use it for some website that is a really excellent thing indeed!  Most people have it by default because it come preloaded and they don't take it off.

4 Got the update yesterday.  The irritating thing about Java updates is that until recently, they would accumulate: you'd have six or seven versions out there, and while they played together well enough, they ate up 47 times their weight in excess disk space.  Java 6.29 does not do this, apparently, though Firebox 3.16.x did not clear out the older version of the Java console.  (All this presumes XP SP3; I have no idea what life is like on Win7 or any version of Mac OS.)

5 Thanks for the heads up Charles.  I didn't check on my Win7 box because I hardly use it for anything outside of logging into my work computer.  But you were right - I hadn't updated Java since 6.14 version and it was still there... all 90Mb of it - now it's gone.
